Capetonians taking part in the Absa Run Your City Series (RYCS) Heritage Day Virtual Run on Thursday 24 September 2020 can support four of the Mother City’s iconic charities when they enter online.
The four charities are: Die Burger Kinderfonds, The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, help2read and Cotlands.
Started in 1957, Die Burger Kinderfonds is a non-profit organisation that assists children in the community that are in need of trauma counselling.
“The Absa RYCS highlights three of SA’s major cities,” says Suzaan Potgieter, Coordinator at Die Burger-Kinderfonds. “It is a wonderful idea to continue with a virtual event in times when traditional events are not possible. It is especially great in promoting health and fitness since many people are looking for ways to have fun while exercising. We are thankful for the support that we have received from participants over the years. Donations received will go towards various types of therapy and assistance for children who suffer from trauma.”
Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. A registered non-profit organisation and Public Benefit Organisation, the society relies on the support of concerned individuals and corporates to continue operating.
“We love the fact that the Absa RYCS gives runners from all walks of life the opportunity to experience their Cities in such an active way,” says Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. “We are excited to hear that the event organisers have launched a Heritage Day Virtual Run. It demonstrates the resilience of South African hearts, both in the hearts of the Stillwater Sports Team and in the hearts of all the runners who enter. The pandemic and the national lockdown have taken so much away from everyone and it is encouraging to see how we all are finding new and creative ways to still do the things we love. We would like to encourage the community to enter the Absa RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run. Run your heart out for the love of animals.”
A non-profit organisation, help2read’s mission is to erase illiteracy in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, one literacy lesson at a time. Since the organisation’s first one-on-one reading session in 2006, help2read has worked in over 400 schools and reached 23 000 children through their literacy programmes.
According to Nikki Knowler, Business Development Manager at help2read, the Absa RYCS is a fantastic way to celebrate three amazing South African Cities. “It is also a wonderful platform to raise awareness for charity organisations such as help2read. The Virtual Run is a very clever and innovative alternative to the traditional events. Hosting a race (virtually) that celebrates South African culture and cities on Heritage Day is perfectly matched. We are proud to be involved.”
Cotlands is a registered non-profit early childhood development organisation with a rich heritage of 84 years of experience in serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see children thrive in their pre-school years by increasing their access to play-based early learning opportunities.
“The Absa RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run is a wonderful way to unite residents of a city virtually,” says Natalie Frank, Marketing and Communications Manager at Cotlands. “Heritage Day is a great day to host the Virtual Run. It is the one day that we can celebrate our diverse cultural heritage and the contribution that each one of us living in South Africa can make to building a better country. This is the time for random acts of kindness, where we need to help and support each other. We are both excited and proud to be one of the charities of choice for the Heritage Day Virtual Run.”
