Runners once again opened their hearts (and wallets) at the Absa Cape Town 12 ONERUN in 2019 resulting in a whopping combined total of R95 830 being donated to the event’s four charities: Die Burger Kinderfonds, The Cape Of Good Hope SPCA, help2read and Cotlands.
“The running community’s generosity never ceases to amaze us,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “The Absa Cape Town 12 ONERUN’s charities lie close to our hearts. We are thankful to each and every runner for embracing these charities. Your support is appreciated and guaranteed to be put to good use.”
Started in 1957, Die Burger Kinderfonds is a non-profit organisation that aims to assist with the educational needs of less fortunate children and developing the youth’s leadership skills.
“Die Burger Kinderfonds supports organisations and communities where children are less fortunate,” says Suzaan Potgieter, Die Burger Kinderfonds Coordinator. “These organisations include ACVV (Afrikaanse Christelike Vroue Vereniginig) and Badisa. The funds we receive are used to assist these organisations in funding the healing process for children affected by trauma – like paying for psychologists and specialised therapy.”
“We are proud to be a charity of the Absa Cape Town 12 ONERUN and love how the event connects different people – whether you are running professionally or just to enjoy it. It’s a beautiful race that has proven to attract generous people. The funds received helped us to make a difference in the lives of so many children. We are extremely thankful for the support and look forward to a spectacular 2020 event.” For more information like Die Burger Kinderfonds’ Facebook page.
Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country.
“Our journey together with the Absa Cape Town 12 ONERUN has been a remarkable one,” says Natasha Johannes, Fundraising Officer Cape of Good Hope SPCA. “It is heart-warming to see that so many people support and share our mission and vision for all animals. The donations received enabled us to rescue and rehome thousands of stray, abandoned, confiscated and unwanted animals. We are excited to be involved with the 2020 event. We will again be present at registration, where we will handover t-shirts to runners who donated R220 or more to our organisation (via the online registration process). We will also sell a limited range of SPCA branded merchandise as a means of raising additional funds and awareness for the organisation.” For more information visit: www.capespca.co.za
Founded in 1936, Cotlands is a registered non-profit early childhood development organisation that has a rich heritage of over 80 years of experience in serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see to it that children thrive in their pre-school years by increasing their access to play-based early learning opportunities.
“Cotlands is honoured to be a charity of the 2020 Absa Cape Town 12 ONERUN,” says Natalie Frank, Cotlands Marketing and Communications Manager. “Through the event, we hope to inform the public that there are millions of children who do not have access to early learning play-based opportunities. Cotlands would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all runners who supported our cause in 2019. The funds received will be allocated to our Toy Library projects, in so doing ensuring that we fulfil our mission to increase access to play-based early learning opportunities for marginalised children.” For more information visit: www.cotlands.org
help2read is a literacy and education development organisation working to promote and develop English literacy skills in public primary school learners in South Africa. Our vision is that all children will leave primary school literate.
“As a proudly South African organisation, we love that the Absa Cape Town 12 ONERUN celebrates the City that we so deeply care about,” says Nikki Knowler, help2read Corporate Business and Programme Development. “help2read facilitates reading support programmes in 21 schools throughout Cape Town. We are grateful for the donation received in 2019. It was used in both our Volunteer Reading Helpers programme and our Literacy Tutor programme. Since 2006, help2read has cumulatively reached over 23 000 primary school learners in 400 schools. The donations received from runners made it possible.” For more information visit: www.help2read.org
