In addition to offering a world class racing experience at the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY (RYC) CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 15 May, event organizers have pulled out all the stops to ensure a route experience that is second to none in 2022.

“Since the inception of the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K in 2015 (then a 12k), our goal has been to treat all runners (and walkers) to an action-packed route experience that boasts a ‘festival vibe’ from start to finish,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RYC Series. “This year we are pulling out all the stops to ensure that it’s the best on-route experience ever. We’ve secured the most impressive lineup of Cape Town’s leading performing arts groups and are also excited to welcome back some of our most iconic sponsor activations. Runners can look forward to experiencing a memorable 10km journey that incorporates iconic landmarks and goes through areas that radiate the unique vibe of the Mother City. We are very excited by the fact that the 2022 route will be the fastest and flattest route featured at the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K to date.”

Absa Managing Executive Geoff Lee commented; “At Absa, we believe in the power of the collective. By joining Team Absa on Strava, every step you take will make a difference. Our newly launched campaign Together we can be more, Siyabangena is not only about getting active, but also enables colleagues, customers and community members to act collectively towards being an active force for good in their respective communities ensuring that they are part of bringing Africa’s possibility to life and fostering a culture of action.”

A number of Cape Town’s leading performing arts groups will be out in full force ready to entertain runners from start to the finish. These groups will include: the Kaapse Klopse Karnival, Marimba Capewhalers Outreach Group, AfroBeat Drumming, Maccassar Colour Guard and Youth Drumming Ensemble Troupe, Lindelani Performing Arts, Mayibuye Mixed Ensemble and Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (LAMTA) to mention just a few.

Formed in 2019 in the community of Macassar and Firgrove, the Marimba Cape Whalers outreach group is made up of local children and young adults who are between the ages of 10 – 30 and were raised in these two communities.  This group consists of marimba and percussion players.

“Being booked to perform at the 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K motivates us to continue with our rehearsals and also brings with it hope that things will be normal again soon,” says Mr. Paul Mongwe, Founder and Teacher of the Marimba Cape Whalers outreach group. “We can’t wait to experience a positive response from the runners and are looking forward to having a fun day out in the Mother City.”

Started in 2009 AfroBeat Drumming is made up of professional djembe drummers as well as drummers from all walks of life.  Group members range from 21 to 55 years of age.  As a business, AfroBeat Drumming runs drum circles for team building and functions and also gives drumming performances for events like the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K.

“This won’t be the first time that we perform at the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K,” confirms David Keuning, Owner of AfroBeat Drumming. “It really is a great experience and lots of fun providing entertainment for the runners as they go by. Going by their response, the runners also seem to really enjoy it. We are really looking forward to Drumming with each other while getting to be part of this iconic event again.

Formed in 2015 the Macassar Color Guard and Youth Drumming Ensemble Troupe uses choreography and equipment for added visual appeal during a marching band show.  The purpose of the color guard is to interpret the music that the drum is playing via the synchronized work of flags, through dance.  The group consists of youth members that are aged between 10 to 25 years.

“We can’t wait to showcase our talent at the 2022 Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K,” says Peter Aaron, Macassar Color Guard and Youth Drumming Ensemble Troupe. “Runners and spectators can look forward to some good entertainment, high energy levels and serious motivation and cheering as runners go by.”

The main focus of Lindelani Performing Arts is to make sure that children are exposed to events such as the Absa RYC CAPE TOWN 10K to improve and hone their skills while keeping them occupied and off the streets.

“Being part of the event gives our members and performers something exciting to work towards especially after the negativity of the last two years (referring to the COVID-19 Pandemic),” says Thulani Dupa from Lindelani Performing Arts. “We are all very excited to be given the opportunity to interact with an audience again. Our spirits are high, and rehearsals are full of energy and excitement. Everyone is looking forward to this event.”
